Welcome to the EPASI website

EPASI in Europe (Charting Educational Policies to Address Social Inequalities in Europe) evaluated educational policies designed to counter disadvantage and inequality in Europe. We analysed policies in fourteen European countries, and report on policies designed to address disadvantage in particular groups. We give an overview of current policy and practice in Europe. We have based our analyses on projects in fourteen European countries: Belgium; the Czech Republic: Cyprus; Denmark; France; Greece; Ireland; Luxembourg; Malta; the Netherlands; Slovakia; Spain; Sweden and the United Kingdom. The work was carried out between January 2007 and February 2009.

This site allows you to access our reports, findings, analyses and much of our data.

  • Our Overall Report summarises our principal findings and analyses, and suggests actions. This report draws substantially on more detailed analyses and data.
  • In each country we analysed about twenty educational projects, each intended in some way to address the educational needs of a specific group of disadvantaged people. Over 280 Project Study reports are available in a searchable database on this website.
  • Using official reports and academic analyses of these countries' educational policies towards equality and disadvantage, and on our project studies, we report on the overall policy objectives and practice in each country, in a set of fourteen Country Reports.
  • We have also made three or four indicative Case Studies for each country. These are more discursive accounts of particular projects, giving a more general narrative about specific projects.

Both Court Reports and Case Studies can be individually downloaded: they are arranged by country. You can also search for specific terms in both sets of reports.

  • Our series of Thematic Studies examine particular forms of disadvantage that may impact on educational attainment. These draw on data across all fourteen countries. The themes that we identified (which overlap, and where many people may have multiple disadvantages) are socio- economic disadvantage, ethnic minorities, linguistic minorities, gender, religious minorities, indigenous minorities and disability. Each Thematic report can be individually downloaded. You can also search for specific terms in all seven reports.
